March 2024

Bishop Gilpin School is a lovely Church of England Primary School in Wimbledon. They held an art week and as part of that, invited artists to come and create with the children. The school’s library had a 15m wall that they thought would make a good site for a mural, so we set about trying to put together some ideas for it.

Each year has a book that they study, so we decided to represent the covers of the books along the entire length of the wall, which gave each book cover about a generous 2m wide mural, we then needed to work out how to give every child in years 1-4 the opportunity to take part in painting the mural. It was a challenge, but never one to shy away from these things, we made it work and the result is great.

“Working with Sarah at Charlotte Designs was an extremely positive experience. From start to finish, she understood our vision and we now have a beautiful, 15m, wall mural as a result!” said Art Lead Sophie Drew.  “Sarah supported the children brilliantly as they painted their additions to the mural and they were so proud to have contributed.” School murals do more than just brighten a corridor, they really change the feel of a space and encourage participation and learning.  “Each morning, it is an amazing piece of art for the children to see as they arrive in school and it has really brightened our school environment. Staff, pupils and parents alike have all been blown away by the quality and creativity of the mural Sarah designed.”
